About
For Parents
Welcome to Wisconsin hockey. Here's what every new and returning hockey family should know.
Getting Started
Every player in WAHA must be registered with USA Hockey for the current season. Your local association handles team registration and placement — find your home association on the Associations page.
First-Time Skaters
Try Hockey For Free events run statewide throughout the season — free equipment, free ice, no commitment. Check the calendar for upcoming dates.
Equipment Basics
- HECC-approved helmet with full cage
- Mouthguard (recommended for all, required for body-contact ages)
- Shoulder pads, elbow pads, hockey pants
- Shin guards and hockey socks
- Hockey gloves and skates
- Stick sized to player's chin without skates
- Hockey bag and water bottle
The Mite Equipment Grant covers a full set of gear for first-time 8U players — see the Forms page to apply.
Code of Conduct
Parents are expected to model good sportsmanship at all times. Cheer for your team, respect the officials, and let the coaches coach.
Concussion Awareness
All Wisconsin youth athletes must acknowledge concussion awareness. Read the protocol on our Concussion & Safety page.
Locker Room Policy
USA Hockey requires two-deep adult supervision of locker rooms. Parents are welcome — review the youth protection policy with your team.
